Why what looks like resistance is often protection — and how safety changes performance
There’s a moment in freediving — somewhere between the surface and the edge of light — where the story drops out.
Not because you forced it to.
Not because you fixed anything.
But because your body decided it was safe enough to stop defending.
That moment I had that realization, it changed how I understand the nervous system — both in the water and in the therapy room.
Not as something to control. But as something to recognize.
Here are three things freediving taught me that I haven’t been able to unsee since.
1. You’re Not Resistant — You’re Defended
In both therapy and freediving, I kept seeing the same thing:
People labeling themselves as stubborn. Avoidant. Difficult.
Divers who “couldn’t relax.”
Clients who “wouldn’t go there.”
But the body wasn’t refusing.
The body was protecting something.
When we shift the question from
“What is wrong with you?”
to
“What is this body protecting?”
everything reorganizes.
Resistance stops being a problem to solve and becomes a signal to interpret.
In the water, that might look like:
- an early turn
- a tight breath
- a refusal to descend
- a sense of unease, wanting to leave
On land, it might show up as:
- shutdown
- overthinking
- pulling back right when things matter
- Rescheduling appointments at the last minute
- Recluctance to “show up.”
Different environments. Same physiology.
The nervous system doesn’t care about the story.
It tracks safety. And when safety isn’t there, it sets a boundary.
Not to sabotage you — but to keep you intact.
2. Safety Is Something the Body Recognizes
Because safety isn’t something you can force into the body — but it is something you can begin to access by asking two simple questions:
Am I safe?
Do I feel safe?
Those are not the same question. Stop and ask yourself right now. Look at it this way:
One reflects your environment.
The other reflects your internal state.
And the gap between them is where most dysregulation lives.
You can be objectively safe and still feel like something is wrong.
You can feel calm in environments that aren’t actually safe.
The nervous system doesn’t respond to logic alone. It responds to what it perceives. It is something the nervous system evaluates continuously — through neuroception.
That evaluation is based on cues:
- respiratory pacing
- muscular tone
- environmental predictability
- relational congruence
Learning safety, then, isn’t about convincing the body that everything is fine.
It’s about understanding what the body is responding to — and giving it enough evidence to soften.
Individually, safety can be supported through bottom-up regulation:
- extending the exhale just enough for the body to follow
- reducing muscular bracing, especially in the jaw, shoulders, and diaphragm
- orienting attention toward something neutral or stable instead of scanning for threat
With another person, something else becomes possible.
Safety becomes relational.
It can be felt in:
- matched pacing
- consistent tone
- non-coercive presence
This is co-regulation — not something one person gives and the other receives, but something that emerges when neither nervous system has to brace.
In this context, the “other” is not creating safety directly — but shaping the conditions under which the nervous system is more likely to perceive it.
3. Performance Is a Byproduct of Safety
Once the nervous system begins to register enough safety, something shifts.
Not dramatically.
Not all at once.
But noticeably.
The breath settles.
Muscle tone organizes instead of braces.
Attention narrows — not from urgency, but from focus.
And this is where performance starts to change.
Not because you tried harder — but because the body stopped fighting itself.
In freediving, this becomes undeniable.
You can’t override physiology with willpower.
You can push, strain, force your way through a dive — but the cost shows up quickly:
- oxygen is used inefficiently
- contractions feel sharper, more urgent
- decision-making becomes reactive instead of precise
Because when the nervous system detects threat, it prioritizes survival over efficiency.
Even when the environment is objectively safe.
The mammalian dive response is designed to support the body under pressure:
- heart rate slows
- blood shifts toward vital organs
- oxygen is conserved
But access to that efficiency is not automatic. It depends on whether the nervous system allows it.
And that comes back to interpretation. The same internal signals — CO₂ rise, pressure, contractions — can be experienced in two very different ways:
As threat → the body braces
As information → the body adapts
That distinction is everything.
Because when those signals are no longer interpreted as danger, the body doesn’t escalate.
It organizes. This is where capacity builds. Not through force — but through repeated experiences where the body learns:
“I can feel this… and I’m still okay.”
And over time, that changes not just performance — but self-concept.
This is reflected in what we see across freedivers, where improvements in calm, confidence, and connection emerge alongside the physical practice — not as separate outcomes, but as part of the same physiological shift.
Performance, then, is not something you chase.
It’s something that follows.
A quick way to check if your nervous system feels safe
Before you try to change anything, just notice.
Take a moment — whether you’re sitting, standing, or even thinking about your last dive — and scan for a few simple cues:
- Did your breath feel steady… or effortful?
- Did your body feel relaxed… or slightly braced?
- Did your jaw, face, or shoulders feel soft… or tight?
- Did your heart rate feel even… or reactive?
- Did you feel able to stay still without urgency?
- Did your recovery — after stress or exertion — feel smooth or delayed?
- Did your voice feel natural, or slightly held?
- Did your environment — and the people around you — feel predictable and consistent?
You don’t need to overanalyze this.
Just get a general sense:
More ease = more evidence of safety
More effort = your system may still be orienting to protection
This is the nervous system doing exactly what it’s designed to do — interpreting signals and deciding whether it needs to defend or can begin to organize.
And this is where the two questions come back in:
Am I safe?
Do I feel safe?
Sometimes those answers align. Sometimes they don’t.
That discrepancy isn’t a failure — it’s information.
Because the nervous system doesn’t respond to instruction.
It responds to evidence. And when enough of those cues begin to shift — breath, tone, pacing, connection — the system updates.
That’s when safety stops being something you think about — and becomes something your body recognizes.

If you’re starting to notice how much of your experience — whether in the water or in your everyday life — is shaped by these subtle shifts in safety, you’re not imagining it.
This is the work. Not forcing calm. Not pushing through discomfort.
But learning how to recognize what your nervous system is responding to — and how to work with it.
In freediving, this becomes especially clear.
Because the body doesn’t negotiate with the water.
It reveals what’s already there.
And when safety is present — not perfectly, but consistently enough — everything changes:
Breath becomes more efficient.
Decisions become clearer.
The dive becomes quieter.
And beyond performance, something else starts to shift —
your relationship to pressure, to discomfort, and to yourself.
